Defense: counterattack (1)
A counterattack is a crushing chess trick! So let’s learn more about it.
Counterattacking means that you defend by attacking on your own turn. You pick a piece that has the same or a higher value. Now, the other player has little to gain in taking your piece. However… it’s up to your opponent. He is free to take if he likes.
But there is a way to keep your opponent from capturing. By checking his king. This leaves him no choice. He is forced to get out of check instead of taking your piece.
Study the example to learn how this works.
What do you have to do?
Defend your piece by (safely!) checking your opponent. Make room for the attacked piece.
White is about to lose his bishop. There are no safe squares.
White launches a counterattack to safe the bishop. He threatens the most important piece on the chessboard: the king.
By giving check, White keeps Black from capturing.
Black needs to get out of check first!
Now, White has time to solve the bishop issue. Since the queen has left her spot, the bishop now has a flight square .
